The Buzz

Matrix Console Options

Critics are excited about the new Matrix recumbent and upright exercise bikes, as there has been a dearth of new high-end residential models in the past few years.  These bikes go head to head with Life Fitness, and time will tell whether they become as popular as the LifeCycle models.

The U30 is one of two upright bikes in the series, along with the U50, and these are beautifully designed bikes with the look and feel of something you'd find in a high end health club.

The bike features smooth and quiet eddy current brake resistance (Exact Force on the up-level U50 model), a comfortable, adjustable seat, 20 levels of resistance to choose from, and multi-position handlebars so you can vary your grip.

Perhaps the most appealing aspect of the U30 as well as all of the other bikes is the fact that you can choose a console that most appeals to you. There are three choices here, a basic XR LCD display, the XER 10" touch screen and the XIR 16" HD touch screen.

The latter two give you apps, internet connection, speakers and a free Polar chest strap for more accurate heart readings.  They add about $500 and $1000, respectively to the cost of the bike (around $1499 when it's on sale) but if you have it in the budget the enhanced features make the workout that much more enjoyable.

Note that there are two similar recumbent models as well...the R30 and the R50, so if you like to recline while you work out those are options as well.  They share most of the same features.

Any way you go, the Matrix U30 upright and its siblings are great high end choices that will provide years of effective workouts with very little maintenance required.  These are truly gym quality machines.

Our Take on the Matrix U30

We like what we've seen so far with the U30, and it is nearly identical to the Matrix exercise bike we use at the gym.  You really can't tell the difference between the two.

If you can swing the extra cost go for at least the XER console for its internet capability.  It makes the workouts go faster and you can also view the Passport videos right on the bike itself instead of on your TV as you need to do with the basic console.

We highly recommend the Matrix U30 and U50, two smart, durable, high quality, ergonomically sound upright bikes from a top-notch company.
